Los Angeles, CA (May 19, 2025)- 405 Freeway Crash Kills Motorcyclist Near Gardena when a 47-year-old rider lost his life in a devastating multi-vehicle collision late Friday night. According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to reports of a downed motorcyclist and an overturned camper on the southbound 405 Freeway at the Vermont Avenue off-ramp around 10:45 p.m. Paramedics from the L.A. County Fire Department pronounced the rider dead at the scene.

The victim, later identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office as Leonard Montanez, suffered fatal blunt force trauma. CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig confirmed Montanez was found lying in the slow lane amidst debris from several vehicles. The overturned camper, ejected from one of the involved cars, came to rest in an adjacent lane. Traffic investigators closed the southbound 405, including the Vermont and Normandie Avenue exits, under a Sigalert while they collected evidence and reconstructed the collision.

Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic aftermath, with shattered glass and vehicle parts strewn across the freeway. Tow trucks arrived shortly after the CHP secured the area, removing the damaged vehicles and camper to reopen lanes. While the exact sequence of events remains under investigation, preliminary findings suggest that one car may have lost control, leading to a chain-reaction crash involving at least three vehicles and the motorcycle.

Type of Compensation at Stake

When a motorcyclist is killed in a traffic collision, surviving family members may pursue a wrongful death claim to recover financial losses and emotional damages. Potential compensation can include funeral and burial expenses, lost financial support and future earnings, loss of companionship and consortium, and reimbursement for any medical bills incurred before death. In California, punitive damages may also be available if the at-fault party exhibited gross negligence or recklessness. Securing fair compensation often requires a thorough investigation to establish liability and calculate the full scope of damages, from tangible costs to intangible losses like loss of love and guidance.
