A 54-year-old Homeland man lost his life Friday evening when his Toyota Prius collided with a Southern California Edison utility truck that was towing a wooden electrical pole in Menifee. The crash, which occurred around 8 p.m. on April 4, 2026, near the intersection of Menifee Road and McLaughlin Road, left the Prius with major damage and claimed the life of the sole occupant. The victim has been identified by the Riverside County coroner as Taylor Williamson.

What Happened

According to the Menifee Police Department, officers responded to the area of Menifee Road, north of McLaughlin Road, and found a 2024 Toyota Prius with extensive damage following a collision with a Southern California Edison utility truck. Preliminary investigation indicates the SCE truck was making a left turn out of the driveway of an Edison substation located on Menifee Road when the Prius, traveling northbound, struck the truck. The Prius then hit the wooden electrical pole being towed behind the utility vehicle. The collision left the passenger car severely damaged. Investigators have stated that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in the crash, and the inquiry into the precise cause of the collision remains ongoing.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Cal Fire Riverside personnel and paramedics responded to the scene, where Taylor Williamson was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported. The Menifee Police Department Traffic Unit is leading the investigation and has asked anyone who witnessed the collision to contact officers at 951-723-1634. The crash is under active investigation as authorities work to determine what led to the utility truck pulling into the path of oncoming traffic.

Injuries and Community Impact

Taylor Williamson, 54, of Homeland, was the sole occupant of the Prius and the only person fatally injured. No occupants of the SCE utility vehicle were reported injured. The crash has prompted questions about the safety protocols surrounding utility vehicle operations near active roadways, particularly when large trucks are turning across lanes of traffic while towing heavy equipment.

Understanding Your Legal Rights After a Crash Involving a Utility or Commercial Truck

When a collision involves a large commercial or utility vehicle — such as a truck owned and operated by a public utility company — the legal landscape can be significantly more complex than a standard two-car accident. Questions of negligence may extend to the vehicle operator, the employer, and potentially the utility company itself, depending on how and where the turn was made. California law allows families of those killed in such crashes to pursue wrongful death claims, and surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for loss of income, loss of companionship, and funeral expenses. An experienced truck accident lawyer can investigate the full circumstances of a crash like this and help identify all responsible parties.
