Los Angeles, CA (JAN 17th, 2025)- A tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a 61-year-old man riding an electric scooter in South Los Angeles earlier this month. The victim, Gregory Simpson, was struck while traveling along East Manchester Avenue in the early hours of January 5th. Los Angeles police reported that Simpson was struck by a BMW SUV traveling at high speed in the same direction. The incident occurred in the 100 block of East Manchester Avenue at approximately 1 a.m.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the driver of the BMW SUV was speeding westbound when they collided with Simpson, who was riding his electric scooter in the same direction. The collision was so severe that Simpson was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The authorities are still investigating the hit-and-run and have released a statement appealing for any witnesses or individuals with information about the incident to come forward.
To help bring justice to Simpson’s family, the city has offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the suspect’s identification, arrest, and conviction. The Los Angeles Police Department urges anyone with additional details to contact Officer Antonio Hurd or Detective Ryan Moreno at 323-421-2500.
The Type of Compensation at Stake for Victims
While the investigation continues, it’s important to understand the potential compensation available to victims of hit-and-run accidents. The victim’s family may be entitled to various compensatory damages in such cases. These can include:
- Medical Expenses: If the victim survives after the collision, the family may be entitled to compensation for any medical treatment received, including hospital stays, surgeries, and ongoing rehabilitation.
- Funeral and Burial Costs: With the tragic loss of Gregory Simpson, the family may be eligible for compensation to cover the funeral and burial expenses, which can add significant financial strain during an already difficult time.
- Loss of Earnings: In cases of death or serious injury, the victim’s family can pursue compensation for the lost wages and future earnings that the victim would have provided if the accident had not occurred.
- Pain and Suffering: Although this is a more difficult claim to quantify, the emotional toll on the family members can also be considered for compensation. This includes the grief, mental anguish, and loss of companionship resulting from the wrongful death.
- Punitive Damages: In some cases, punitive damages can also be awarded. These damages are meant to punish the at-fault party and deter similar actions in the future.
