A 79-year-old woman was killed and five other people were injured Monday afternoon when a Tesla jumped the curb at a Simi Valley shopping center and crashed into the outdoor patio of a cafe. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. on June 29, 2026, near the intersection of Madera Road and Strathearn Place, outside Urbane Cafe at a Target shopping center on Tierra Rejada Road. The Simi Valley Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.

What Happened

According to the Simi Valley Police Department, the driver of a white Tesla was traveling through the shopping center when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle went up the curb near the Target store and struck a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk outside Urbane Cafe. The Tesla continued into the planters outside the restaurant before coming to rest in the middle of the outdoor dining area, which was filled with umbrellas and tables. At least six people were struck by the vehicle. The driver of the Tesla was transported to a nearby hospital in unknown condition. Authorities have not released whether drugs, alcohol, or a medical event played a role in the crash, and the investigation remains active.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Ventura County Fire Department personnel and Simi Valley Police Department officers responded to the scene at the shopping center on Tierra Rejada Road. The Simi Valley Police Department identified the pedestrian killed in the crash as a 79-year-old woman from Agoura Hills. Five additional people who were struck sustained injuries described as minor by fire officials. The driver was transported to a hospital for treatment. The Simi Valley Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances that led the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike the group of pedestrians.

Injuries and Community Impact

A 79-year-old woman from Agoura Hills was killed in the crash. Five other people sustained injuries described as minor. The incident occurred in broad daylight at a busy shopping center, striking pedestrians who were seated or walking near the outdoor dining area of a popular cafe — a location where customers would have had no reason to expect a vehicle to suddenly enter the space.

Understanding Legal Rights After a Vehicle Strikes Pedestrians on a Sidewalk or Patio

When a vehicle leaves the roadway and strikes pedestrians in an area set aside for foot traffic — such as a sidewalk or an outdoor dining patio — the circumstances surrounding the driver’s loss of control become central to both the investigation and any related civil proceedings. California law provides certain legal remedies that may be available to injured individuals and surviving family members, depending on the facts established through the investigation, including whether driver error, a vehicle malfunction, or another factor contributed to the crash. Information about these types of cases can often be found through California pedestrian accident attorney resources and personal injury law materials.

The Simi Valley Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this collision. The findings of that investigation may help determine the legal issues and responsibilities arising from the incident.
