Los Angeles, CA (7 June, 2025)-Authorities Confirm Identity of Victim in 5 Freeway Collision, announcing that 35-year-old Amanda Castillo was officially named by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office Thursday. Castillo was one of two people tragically killed when the gray Jeep Grand Cherokee in which they were riding slammed into the rear of a semi-trailer and erupted into flames on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Sylmar late on May 29. The second occupant of the Jeep has yet to be publicly identified.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Carlos Lopez, responders arrived at the scene just south of Roxford Street on the northbound lanes at approximately 10:41 p.m. They discovered that the Jeep had collided with the back of a tractor-trailer hauling cargo, causing a forceful impact that deployed the vehicle’s airbags and ignited a fire. Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze, but both occupants of the Jeep succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The semi-truck also sustained substantial damage to its rear end, though its driver emerged unscathed, Officer Lopez reported. With debris scattered across three northbound lanes, the CHP issued a SigAlert, shutting down those lanes for several hours while investigators meticulously reconstructed the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

In an official statement, CHP Captain E. A. Krusey expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life: “This is a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two motorists. Our hearts go out to the families affected by this devastating loss. We are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine what happened.”
