A deadly crash claimed two lives in South Hemet on Sunday night, leaving a family devastated and sparking questions about safety and accountability. According to the Hemet Police Department, the tragic incident occurred just after 9 p.m. at 1536 S. State Street, near Chambers Street. Two relatives, identified as 17-year-old Bailey Watterson of Riverside and 25-year-old Pastel Watterson of Redlands, were killed when their compact Kia sedan was struck while pulling out of a driveway.
Authorities reported that Pastel Watterson was behind the wheel of the Kia, with Bailey and a third, unnamed passenger inside. As they exited the driveway, a Toyota sedan heading northbound approached at an unconfirmed speed, according to police. Preliminary investigations suggest that the Toyota collided directly with the Kia as it entered the roadway.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene within minutes. Sadly, Pastel Watterson was pronounced dead at the scene. Bailey Watterson was transported to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where she succumbed to her injuries less than an hour later. The third passenger in the Kia remains hospitalized, though their current condition has not been disclosed.
The driver of the Toyota, who was reportedly alone in the vehicle, sustained only minor injuries and was released from the hospital by Monday morning. While impaired driving is not currently suspected, investigators continue to examine all possible contributing factors, including speed and visibility.
Compensation and Legal Options for Victims’ Families
In devastating crashes like this, the families of the victims are often left facing overwhelming emotional loss and significant financial burdens. Depending on the findings of the ongoing investigation, compensation may be available for the surviving passenger and for the families of Bailey and Pastel Watterson. This may include damages for:
Wrongful death, including funeral expenses and loss of companionship
Medical bills for emergency treatment before the victims passed away
Pain and suffering endured by both victims and their loved ones
Loss of future income if the deceased contributed to household finances
Rehabilitation and long-term care costs for the surviving passenger
Navigating the aftermath of such a traumatic event requires more than emotional strength—it requires legal support from a team that understands both the law and the pain families endure.
