Los Angeles, CA (June 19th, 2025)- A deadly crash on 101 Freeway involves off-duty deputy, leaving the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in mourning after a tragic multi-vehicle collision claimed the life of 31-year-old Deputy Marcos Pena Jr. The crash, which occurred early Tuesday morning near the junction of the Ventura (101), Hollywood (170), and Ventura (134) freeways in Studio City, also resulted in the death of a yet-to-be-identified female victim.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place around 2:15 a.m. when a black Kia SUV came to a stop in the traffic lanes for unknown reasons. Deputy Pena and a woman exited the vehicle moments before a white International box truck crashed into the Kia and struck both victims. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel pronounced them dead at the scene.

Pena, who was off duty at the time, had been serving with the LASD since July 2022 and was assigned to the Men’s Central Jail. His death has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community. Sheriff Robert Luna released a heartfelt statement, saying, “We are heartbroken by the tragic and untimely loss of Deputy Pena Jr., who was taken from us far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those who had the honor of serving alongside him.”

He is survived by his mother, Michelle Rubio; stepfather, Deputy Albert Rubio; and four step-siblings—Diserre, Ashley, Albert, and Deja Rubio.

The crash remains under active investigation by the CHP, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Officer Cody Sturges at the CHP West Valley office.
