Orange County, CA (JAN, 11th 2025)- A tragic crash reported east of Temecula claimed the life of a motorcyclist after a suspected DUI driver allegedly rear-ended the victim on Highway 79 in Aguanga. The incident occurred Thursday evening and involved multiple vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Randall Harold Hennum, 74, of Aguanga, was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, causing great bodily injury. Authorities reported that Hennum remains in custody at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, with bail set at $75,000.

Details of the Fatal Collision

CHP Officer Mike Lassig stated that the collision occurred around 6 p.m. as Hennum was traveling southbound on Highway 79 in a 2013 Hyundai Accent. Approaching the intersection of Highway 79 and State Route 371, Hennum allegedly struck the rear of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, ejecting its rider, a 74-year-old Aguanga man whose name has not been released.

“The impact caused the motorcycle rider to be thrown off the bike, landing on the side of the roadway,” Lassig explained. The motorcycle continued forward, colliding with a Toyota Highlander stopped at the intersection. The SUV driver, a 51-year-old woman from La Quinta, was unharmed, but her vehicle sustained damage.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly after the crash and pronounced the motorcyclist deceased at the scene. Hennum, who was unharmed, was questioned by CHP officers and subsequently arrested after they determined he was under the influence at the time of the crash.

Compensation at Stake for Victims and Families

In tragic cases like this, surviving family members of the deceased motorcyclist may be entitled to pursue compensation under California’s wrongful death laws. This compensation could cover funeral expenses, medical costs incurred before the victim’s passing, lost income, and the emotional distress caused by the sudden loss of a loved one. Additional damages might include loss of companionship, guidance, and support the victim would have provided to their family.

For property owners affected by the collision, such as the SUV driver, there may also be avenues to recover the costs of vehicle repairs and other related expenses.
