Riverside County, CA (Mar 13th, 2025)- Desert Center Rollover Crash Leaves One Dead after a tragic late-night solo-vehicle accident on eastbound Interstate 10 near the community of Desert Center claimed the life of a 61-year-old woman and left the driver injured. The fatal crash occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday west of Red Cloud Mine Road, according to the California Highway Patrol, and remains under investigation.
Authorities identified the victim as Margarita Mares De Torres, 61, of Greenfield. Investigators said she was a passenger in a 2011 Ford Ranger driven by a 62-year-old man from the same city. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 at an unconfirmed speed when it veered toward the dirt center median and rolled over, eventually coming to rest on its left side.
Officials said De Torres was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover. She suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, survived the crash and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of minor injuries.
Investigators noted that alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role in the crash. However, authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including possible factors such as speed, driver fatigue, mechanical issues, or roadway conditions.
