Los Angeles, CA (Jul 21st, 2025)- Four Killed in Norwalk Freeway Collision early Sunday morning after a suspected drunk driver slammed into a disabled car involved in an earlier crash with a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle. The deadly incident unfolded at approximately 12:55 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, just north of Rosecrans Avenue in Norwalk.
According to the CHP, the tragic chain of events began when a Nissan sedan collided with a CHP patrol vehicle, leaving the Nissan disabled in the No. 2 lane. While additional CHP units were en route to the scene, a Kia sedan traveling along the same stretch of freeway violently struck the rear of the disabled Nissan.
Authorities identified the driver of the Kia as Iris Salmeron. The impact caused the Nissan to catch fire, trapping its four occupants inside. Despite rapid response from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, all four individuals inside the Nissan were pronounced dead at the scene. The Kia also had a passenger, and both Salmeron and that individual sustained major injuries. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were reported to have stable vital signs.
A preliminary investigation by CHP officers revealed that Salmeron was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. She has since been arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated—a decision that has left four families in mourning and a community in shock.
Legal Options for Victims’ Families
In cases like this, the families of the deceased may be entitled to pursue wrongful death compensation. This may include funeral and burial expenses, loss of future earnings, emotional suffering, and loss of companionship. Given the involvement of both a DUI and a government vehicle, the legal complexities surrounding liability and negligence are significant. Determining who is accountable—and to what degree—can shape the size and scope of the compensation victims’ families may receive.
