A family’s early Sunday morning in Playa del Rey turned into an unimaginable loss when a hit-and-run driver collided with their vehicle near Vista Del Mar and Culver Boulevard on May 3, 2026. A 27-year-old man and his 14-month-old nephew were killed in the crash, and two other family members were hospitalized — one in critical condition on life support. The driver of the striking vehicle fled the scene and remains at large.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the crash was reported around 4:30 in the morning near 6800 South Vista Del Mar in the Playa del Rey neighborhood. A white Jeep traveling in the area crossed into the path of a blue sedan and struck it with significant force. The sedan was carrying four people: a father, his 14-month-old son, and two of the father’s siblings. The family had been returning home after a beach bonfire when the collision occurred. Witnesses near the scene said the area is known for drivers traveling at high speeds along that stretch of road.
LAFD and LAPD units responded to the scene. Osvaldo Sandoval, 27, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His 14-month-old nephew, Roger, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries. The children’s aunt, a 15-year-old, remains on life support at UCLA Medical Center. The children’s father, Oscar Sandoval, 25, was treated for multiple broken ribs and is in stable condition. The driver of the white Jeep fled the vehicle and was last seen running toward the beach. Video obtained by media at the scene shows a damaged white Jeep consistent with the description left at the location.
LAPD investigators are now working to identify and locate the suspect, described as a man in his 30s. Family members have told reporters they believe the crash may not have been entirely accidental, citing the Jeep driver’s behavior in the moments before impact. Whether alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed were contributing factors remains under investigation. LAPD is asking anyone with information or video footage from the area to come forward.
Understanding Your Legal Rights After a Wrongful Death Accident
When a loved one is killed due to another driver’s reckless or criminal behavior, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim under California law. Cases involving hit-and-run drivers are among the most painful and legally complex situations a family can face — not only is the loss devastating, but identifying and holding the responsible party accountable requires a thorough investigation. Our experienced wrongful death attorneys can help families understand their options, gather evidence, and navigate the legal process while they focus on grieving and healing.
Even in cases where the at-fault driver has fled, families may have legal recourse through uninsured motorist coverage, which California law requires insurers to offer. Damages in a wrongful death case can include funeral and burial costs, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and the profound emotional suffering endured by surviving family members. The sooner an attorney is involved, the better the chance that critical evidence — including surveillance footage, witness accounts, and physical evidence — can be preserved.
