Los Angeles, CA (June 24th, 2024)- LAPD Sergeant Among 2 Killed in 405 Crash on the southbound side of the San Diego (405) Freeway early Monday morning in Brentwood, after he stopped to assist motorists involved in an earlier collision. The tragic incident occurred just north of Moraga Drive around 2 a.m., according to authorities.
The sergeant, identified as 53-year-old Shiou Deng, was a respected veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department. He was on duty when he encountered what appeared to be a serious two-vehicle accident. Acting selflessly, Sgt. Deng parked his patrol SUV, activated his amber hazard lights to alert oncoming traffic, and exited his vehicle to check on those involved.
“Deng saw that it was a severe crash and took action to protect the scene and help the injured,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said. “Tragically, as he walked toward the vehicles, another car struck him.”
Sgt. Deng was immediately transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, but despite the best efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries. A second victim from the initial crash, a man estimated to be in his mid-30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. A third person was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. Their identities had not been released as of Monday afternoon.
The deadly sequence of events led to the closure of the southbound 405 Freeway for several hours during the morning commute, resulting in significant traffic delays while officials conducted a thorough investigation.
Sgt. Deng had been promoted to the rank of sergeant just two years prior and was serving in the West Los Angeles Division. His dedication and courage will be remembered by his colleagues, community, and the countless people he helped during his years of service.
