A tragic accident on the 91 Freeway in Riverside has claimed the life of a dedicated motorcycle deputy. Motorcycle Deputy Timothy Corlew, a valued member of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, lost his life early Wednesday morning in a collision that underscores the inherent risks faced by law enforcement officers every day.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:35 a.m. in the westbound HOV lane near La Sierra Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Deputy Corlew was riding his patrol motorcycle when he encountered traffic stopped across all lanes. As reported by CHP Inland Empire Division spokesman Officer Dan Olivas, “For reasons still under investigation, the deputy collided with the rear of a Lexus sedan and was ejected onto a Hyundai sedan.”

Emergency responders from the Riverside Fire Department arrived quickly and administered life-saving measures before transporting Corlew to Riverside Community Hospital. Tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Lexus driver sustained minor injuries and was also treated at the same hospital, while the occupant of the Hyundai escaped unharmed.

Investigation Underway

The CHP’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is diligently working to determine the circumstances leading to this heartbreaking accident. While early reports suggest criminal charges are unlikely, the investigation remains ongoing. “Based on what we know right now, it is unlikely any criminal charges will be coming out of this,” CHP Officer Javier Navarro shared.

A Legacy of Service

Sheriff Chad Bianco expressed the department’s profound sorrow in a statement, saying, “With immense sadness and a heavy heart, I must report the sheriff’s office has lost another deputy in a line-of-duty death.” Deputy Corlew began his career with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in February 2016. After completing the public safety academy, he served as a court bailiff before transitioning to patrol operations in 2019. In June 2022, he completed Motor School and proudly joined the ranks of motorcycle patrol officers. Corlew leaves behind a grieving wife, two sons, and countless colleagues and community members who admired his dedication to public service.

The High Costs of Loss

The death of Deputy Corlew highlights not only the emotional toll on his family and department but also the potential for financial hardship. Families of fallen officers may face medical bills, funeral expenses, and the sudden loss of income. In cases like these, surviving loved ones may be eligible for various forms of compensation, including workers’ compensation benefits, accidental death benefits, and civil claims where applicable.
