One person dies, three others injured in Riverside collision that unfolded near downtown in a devastating multi-vehicle crash believed to have been caused by a suspected drunk driver. The tragic incident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Market and Fifth streets, according to the Riverside Police Department.
Authorities say a 37-year-old man, later identified as Christian Barragan of Riverside, was behind the wheel of a Honda Civic when a speeding Dodge Challenger struck his vehicle from behind. Sgt. Emilio Angulo reported that the Dodge was traveling southbound on Market Street at a dangerously high speed when it rear-ended the slower-moving Civic. The impact forced the Honda into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with a vehicle traveling northbound.
After pushing the Civic into the northbound lanes, the Dodge continued its destructive path and hit another vehicle before finally coming to a stop. Witnesses say the driver of the Dodge attempted to flee the scene, but patrol officers were quick to respond and detained him at the site. Authorities believe the suspect was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, although his identity has not yet been released pending investigation.
Christian Barragan was rushed to Riverside Community Hospital with critical injuries. Sadly, he passed away less than an hour later. The suspected drunk driver, along with the other two motorists involved, sustained moderate to minor injuries and received treatment at the same hospital. Fortunately, they are expected to recover.
