Two people narrowly survived after an overturned big rig came to rest on top of their sedan on the 91 Freeway in Anaheim on Tuesday evening, May 6, 2026. The truck, which was hauling a large shipping container, rolled over near the Brookhurst Street on-ramp and the container landed directly on the smaller vehicle below. Remarkably, both occupants were able to free themselves from the wreckage and were transported to a hospital for evaluation.

What Happened

The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. on the 91 Freeway at Brookhurst Street in Anaheim. A big rig hauling a cargo container overturned, sending the container down onto a passenger sedan traveling in the same area. First responders noted that the back end of the container landed on a concrete k-rail barrier, which prevented the full weight of the load from descending onto the vehicle — a factor that likely played a significant role in the occupants surviving. The two individuals inside the sedan were able to exit through the passenger side of the vehicle. The big rig driver was also taken to the hospital. Details about the cause of the rollover were not immediately available.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Emergency crews responded to the scene on the 91 Freeway following reports of the overturned commercial truck. First responders assisted all three individuals involved and arranged hospital transport. The California Highway Patrol and local fire and emergency services were on scene. An investigation into what caused the big rig to overturn has been initiated, though no contributing factors such as impairment or mechanical failure had been publicly identified as of the initial report.

Injuries and Community Impact

All three individuals — the two sedan occupants and the big rig driver — were taken to the hospital in unknown condition. The crash caused significant disruption on the 91 Freeway, which is one of Orange County’s most heavily traveled routes. Crashes involving commercial trucks on congested freeway corridors like the 91 can affect thousands of commuters and raise broader concerns about the safety of heavy cargo vehicles sharing lanes with passenger cars.

Understanding Your Legal Rights After a Truck Accident

Collisions involving big rigs and commercial vehicles often involve complex liability questions, including the responsibility of the truck driver, the trucking company, and the cargo loader. In California, injured parties and their families may have the right to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. An experienced truck accident lawyer can help victims navigate these claims, identify all responsible parties, and ensure that evidence from the scene is properly preserved. Time is an important factor in truck accident cases, as vehicle data and freight documentation can be critical.
