A 26-year-old Mecca man was killed Saturday morning after a vehicle ran a stop sign and crashed into his car at an intersection in the community of Thermal. This Thermal car accident was reported at approximately 5 a.m. on June 13, 2026, at the intersection of Avenue 58 and Buchanan Street. The victim, Pablo Garcia Lopez, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the other vehicle sustained major injuries and was hospitalized.

What Happened

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2017 Acura RDX was traveling eastbound on Avenue 58 at an unspecified rate of speed when, for reasons that remain unknown, the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Buchanan Street. The Acura crashed into a 2009 Toyota Camry that was traveling northbound on Buchanan Street directly through the intersection. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to overturn. Pablo Garcia Lopez, the driver of the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Acura sustained major injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The CHP has not released why the Acura driver failed to stop at the posted stop sign, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Emergency Response and Investigation

CHP officers and emergency personnel responded to the intersection of Avenue 58 and Buchanan Street in Thermal following the crash. Pablo Garcia Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene. The Acura driver was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with major injuries. The CHP is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the failure to stop at the intersection. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol.

Injuries and Community Impact

Pablo Garcia Lopez, 26, of Mecca, was killed at the scene while lawfully traveling through the intersection on Buchanan Street. The driver who ran the stop sign sustained major injuries. The crash occurred in Thermal, a community in the eastern Coachella Valley, at an intersection governed by a stop sign — a basic traffic control device meant to prevent exactly this type of collision.

Understanding Legal Rights After a Stop Sign Violation Causes a Fatal Crash

When a driver is alleged to have failed to stop at a posted stop sign before a fatal collision, questions of negligence and liability often become central to any civil claim. Stop signs exist specifically to prevent intersection collisions between cross-traffic, and a driver who disregards one bears significant responsibility for any resulting harm. The family of Pablo Garcia Lopez may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if the investigation determines another party was at fault for the collision. An experienced car accident attorney can obtain the CHP collision report, review physical evidence from the intersection, and build a comprehensive civil case to ensure the family receives full accountability and compensation.
