Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Two Vehicles on 5 Freeway [Orange County, CA]

Orange County, CA (April 1st, 2025)- A tragic incident occurred early Monday morning when a pedestrian was struck and killed by two vehicles on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Anaheim.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports of the crash at 2:03 a.m. on the southbound lanes, just north of Lincoln Avenue. The victim, later identified as 23-year-old Javier Lizandro Velazquez from South Gate, was hit by both a white truck and a black Honda Civic.

According to the CHP, a witness reported that the white truck struck the pedestrian in the middle lane. However, as the investigation unfolded, it became apparent that the black Honda Civic had also been involved, hitting the victim after the initial collision. Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

In response to the deadly crash, the CHP issued a SigAlert at 2:18 a.m., effectively shutting down the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway and the Euclid Street on-ramp. The far right lane was reopened by 3:11 a.m., and other vehicles were diverted off the freeway at Euclid Street. While all lanes were reopened by approximately 7 a.m., the traffic congestion caused by the incident was significant, stretching back to Valley View Avenue.

The victim, identified as Javier Lizandro Velazquez, was a young man with his whole life ahead of him, making this tragedy all the more heartbreaking.
