Los Angeles, CA (Jan 27th, 2025)- Police Identify Victim in the fatal downtown LA Crash as a 60-year-old man who was struck and killed by a pickup truck while crossing a busy downtown intersection in the early morning hours, according to county officials.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Curtis Hosea, who was using a wheelchair at the time of the collision. The fatal crash occurred around 2 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Hill Street and Fifth Street, a location known for late-night traffic and limited visibility. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the details on Tuesday.

According to police, Hosea was crossing Hill Street when he was struck by a Ford F-150 traveling northbound. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Hosea was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. Authorities stated that the driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No immediate arrests were announced, and the circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.

Police also indicated that Hosea was believed to have been experiencing homelessness, a factor that often highlights broader safety concerns for vulnerable pedestrians in downtown Los Angeles. Individuals using wheelchairs, mobility aids, or traveling on foot face a significantly higher risk of serious injury or death when struck by a vehicle, particularly at night or in poorly lit areas.

Compensation That May Be at Stake for Victims’ Families

In fatal pedestrian accidents like this, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation can help cover funeral and burial expenses, medical costs incurred before death, and the loss of financial support the victim may have provided. Families may also seek damages for loss of companionship, care, and emotional support, which are often the most devastating consequences of a fatal crash.

Even when a victim is believed to be homeless or unemployed, the law still recognizes the value of human life. We often remind families that compensation is not limited solely to income-related losses. The emotional impact, suffering, and loss endured by loved ones are legally significant and should not be overlooked.
