A Rancho Park hit-and-run leaves elderly man dead, sparking a police investigation and renewed calls for driver accountability. The tragic incident occurred late Monday night in the West Los Angeles neighborhood of Rancho Park, where a 70-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a speeding driver who fled the scene.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to the crash at approximately 10:46 p.m. near the intersection of Westwood and Exposition boulevards. According to investigators, the victim was attempting to cross Westwood Boulevard—just north of Exposition and outside of a designated crosswalk—when he was hit by a dark blue Mazda hatchback traveling at a high speed.
Rather than stopping to render aid, the driver of the Mazda fled the scene, leaving the elderly man critically injured in the roadway. When emergency personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived, they pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The LAPD’s West Traffic Division has taken charge of the investigation and is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle or driver involved to come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to call 213-473-0234 during business hours or 877-527-3247 after hours and on weekends. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or online at lacrimestoppers.org.
What Kind of Compensation Can Be Pursued in a Fatal Hit-and-Run?
When a loved one is taken away due to someone else’s negligence—especially in a hit-and-run—the victim’s family may be entitled to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. While no amount of money can replace a life, pursuing justice can provide financial relief and closure. Potential compensation may include:
Funeral and burial expenses
Medical bills if the victim received treatment before death
Loss of companionship or emotional support
Loss of income or financial support
Pain and suffering endured by the family
These claims can become even more complex when the at-fault driver is unidentified. In such cases, families may still be able to seek compensation through uninsured motorist coverage if it exists within the victim’s auto insurance policy.
