Los Angeles, CA (May 21st, 2025)- Santa Clarita Crash Claims Life of Off-Duty Deputy when a Sunday afternoon commute ended in tragedy on San Francisquito Canyon Road, south of Dry Gulch Road. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that 21-year-old Deputy Daniel V. Chavira—riding in his personal vehicle—was fatally injured in the multi-vehicle collision, which occurred shortly after 3:15 p.m. on Monday. According to the California Highway Patrol, three vehicles sustained substantial damage, and multiple individuals were hurt in the pile-up.
First responders arrived within minutes, rendering aid to all victims. Deputy Chavira was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The surviving victims were transported by ambulance to the same facility and are currently recovering under medical supervision. Deputy Chavira, who had graduated from the Sheriff’s Academy on October 4, 2024, and been assigned to the North County Correctional Facility, was due to begin patrol school and join Palmdale Station later this year.
“We mourn the loss of Deputy Daniel V. Chavira, a dedicated young deputy whose passion for service was evident from day one,” the LASD stated. Known for his humility and commitment to public safety, Deputy Chavira leaves behind a proud family: his father, two brothers—including Deputy René Valencia-Chavira of Lancaster Station—his wife, Deputy Crystal Valencia of San Fernando Court, and his sister, Detective Nancy Alcaraz of Palmdale Station.
Dozens of fellow officers gathered at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital to honor his memory, forming a solemn procession as his remains were escorted to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s headquarters in Boyle Heights. “Our deputy dedicated his life to the service and safety of others, both in and out of uniform,” Sheriff Robert Luna said. “His commitment to public safety was not just a job—it was who he was.”
Various forms of compensation may be available for those injured in this devastating crash. Victims can seek reimbursement for medical expenses, ongoing therapy, lost income due to time away from work, and non-economic damages such as pain and suffering or emotional distress. In tragic cases where a life is lost, families may pursue wrongful death claims to cover funeral costs, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship. Navigating these complex claims against insurance carriers and government entities requires experienced legal guidance.
