Los Angeles, CA (Feb 2nd, 2025)- The driver of a silver sedan struck a bicyclist before crashing into a Westwood supermarket, leaving three people dead and six others injured in a tragic accident.

The crash was reported at 12:11 p.m. at the 99 Ranch Market, located at 1350 S. Westwood Blvd., on the corner of Rochester Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). Emergency crews responded immediately, working to free victims trapped inside the store.

Three people—a 55-year-old man, a 42-year-old woman, and a 30-year-old man—were pronounced dead at the scene, LAFD spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz confirmed. All three were inside the grocery store’s bakery at the time of the accident.

LAPD Capt. Erik Scott said four additional victims were transported to hospitals. Two 35-year-old men were in critical condition, while two others, aged 37 and 38, were in moderate condition. The sedan’s driver and the bicyclist were evaluated at the scene but declined transport to a hospital.

Authorities noted that multiple people were trapped beneath the vehicle inside the market after the sedan crashed through the glass storefront. A triage operation was established outside the store to treat injured victims and coordinate emergency services. Westwood Boulevard remained closed for several hours due to the scale of the rescue effort.

According to police, the elderly female driver struck a bicyclist about a block from the market, then swerved onto the sidewalk and entered the store, coming to a stop in the bakery section. The driver was interviewed by investigators at the scene. Police said the crash appeared accidental and did not seem intentional.

The building, which previously housed a Borders bookstore, was yellow-tagged by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety due to damage, though inspectors determined it was structurally stable.

Compensation at Stake for Victims and Families

Crashes of this severity can have serious legal and financial consequences for victims and their families. Compensation may include wrongful death damages for funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship. Injured survivors may seek reimbursement for medical bills, ongoing treatment, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, diminished earning capacity, and pain and suffering. Depending on the circumstances, liability may extend beyond the driver to other responsible parties involved in the incident.
