A tragic crash on the 91 Freeway has left a truck driver dead after a suspected street racer fleeing from California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers slammed into his vehicle in Corona. The driver, identified as 55-year-old Stephen Palacios of Rancho Cucamonga, was fatally injured in the collision. His passenger also sustained moderate injuries and is expected to recover, according to authorities.
The suspect, Modesto Daniel Carpio of San Jacinto, was arrested shortly after the crash and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of second-degree murder and felony evading. Authorities say Carpio was one of several drivers participating in an illegal street race late Saturday night on the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway near Euclid Avenue in Ontario. Concerned motorists called 911 to report blocked freeway lanes caused by street racing activity.
When CHP officers arrived at the scene, Carpio was quickly identified as one of the racers. Instead of complying with a patrol unit’s attempt to pull him over, Carpio accelerated his Infiniti sports car to speeds over 100 mph, fleeing south onto Interstate 15 and eventually merging onto the westbound 91 Freeway.
According to Officer Rodrigo Jimenez, the high-speed pursuit ended in catastrophe just east of Lincoln Avenue, where Carpio’s Infiniti struck a semi-truck hauling a trailer. The impact forced the semi into a freeway sound wall, ejecting the driver from the cab. Paramedics from the Corona Fire Department responded to the scene and found Palacios in critical condition. He was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries an hour later.
“This wasn’t just a crash — it was the result of reckless and criminal behavior,” said CHP Capt. Sal Suarez. “Illegal street racing is not just a crime — it’s a threat to every driver on the road.” Carpio was uninjured and taken into custody without further incident. He is being held on $1 million bail, with his case pending review by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
The Compensation at Stake for the Victim’s Family
The loss of a loved one due to someone else’s negligent or criminal actions is devastating, both emotionally and financially. In this case, the family of Stephen Palacios may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim, which could include compensation for funeral expenses, loss of income, loss of companionship, emotional distress, and more. The injured passenger may also be eligible for damages covering medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and ongoing treatment if needed.
