Los Angeles, CA (SEP 17th, 2025)- The victim of the deadly Long Beach hit-and-run collision this week has been identified as 39-year-old Jasmine Martinez, according to the Los Angeles County Office of the Medical Examiner. Martinez tragically lost her life after being struck by a vehicle while walking in a crosswalk in Long Beach, leaving her family and community mourning her sudden loss.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The crash occurred on Friday at approximately 12:16 p.m. near the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and 68th Street. Officers with the Long Beach Police Department quickly responded to the scene. Emergency medical personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived shortly after and rushed Martinez to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities reported that a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling southbound on Long Beach Boulevard in the far-right lane when it struck Martinez as she crossed in the crosswalk. The driver did not stop to render aid and continued down the road.

Suspect Arrested After Leaving the Scene

Police identified the alleged driver as Eric Dewayne Moody. He was located approximately 40 minutes after the incident and taken into custody. Moody was booked at the Long Beach City Jail with bail set at $50,000. At this stage, detectives are still investigating whether alcohol, drugs, or speeding played a role in the fatal crash.

Hit-and-run collisions remain one of the most devastating types of accidents because they combine both negligence and the driver’s failure to take responsibility. For families like Martinez’s, the sudden and preventable loss of a loved one leaves lasting emotional and financial hardships.

The Type of Compensation at Stake

When a pedestrian is killed in a hit-and-run, the surviving family members may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation can cover several areas, including:

  • Medical expenses incurred before the victim’s passing

  • Funeral and burial costs

  • Loss of financial support if the victim contributed to the household income

  • Loss of companionship and guidance for surviving family members

  • Emotional pain and suffering caused by the tragedy

In some cases, punitive damages may also be sought when the driver’s conduct demonstrates reckless disregard for human life, such as fleeing the scene after fatally striking a pedestrian.
