A 5-year-old boy, who has been hospitalized since he and his family were struck by a vehicle during a weekend bicycle ride, has been declared brain dead. This tragic hit-and-run incident in Garden Grove has left the community in shock and mourning.
On Sunday evening, the boy and his family were enjoying a bicycle ride when they were hit by a suspected DUI driver.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Ceferino Ascencion Ramos from Santa Ana, has been charged with multiple felonies, including hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, failing to stop at a hit-and-run accident with injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.
Jacob Ramirez, the young boy, was declared brain dead by doctors, according to a recent NBC4 report. His mother, Angela Hernandez Mejia, shared her heart-wrenching experience, saying, “Right now, I just have 24 hours I begged them for to just spend as much time as I can with him.” She plans to stay by her son’s bedside until she has to say goodbye, a moment no parent should have to endure.
Angela and the family’s 8-month-old daughter, who were also injured in the crash, have since been released from the hospital. However, Angela’s husband and their 6-year-old daughter, Gianna, remain hospitalized. Despite the tragic circumstances, the family continues to hold on to each other for support and strength.
The Garden Grove Police Department reported that the incident occurred at approximately 7:35 p.m. on Haster Street at Twin Tree Lane. Two adults were riding with the children in bike trailers when they were struck by a black 2003 Toyota Camry. The driver fled the scene but was followed by a nearby witness who alerted the police. Officers located and detained the driver approximately 1.2 miles from the scene.
The criminal complaint alleges that Ramos was driving to a liquor store in Anaheim to buy more beer and had a blood alcohol level of .22 at the time of the accident. Ramos did not enter a plea at his arraignment and is scheduled for another hearing on July 25 at the West Justice Center in Westminster.
In the aftermath of this devastating event, the family has received an outpouring of support from the community. A GoFundMe page set up to assist the Ramirez family has raised over $52,000 as of Friday morning. Contributions can be made at www.gofundme.com/f/help-ramirez-family-overcome-accident-trauma.
