Los Angeles, CA (May 3, 2024) – An LAPD detective, Stephanie Carrillo, faces charges stemming from an off-duty hit-and-run crash on the Golden State (5) Freeway that occurred one year ago.

On May 3, 2023, Carrillo was driving an unmarked police vehicle when she allegedly rear-ended a civilian’s car, causing damage.

Despite pulling over after the crash, Carrillo allegedly left the scene before fulfilling her legal obligations, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón.

Carrillo, 47, faces one misdemeanor count of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage. She is scheduled for arraignment on May 22 in downtown Los Angeles and could face up to six months in county jail if convicted.

On the day of the incident, Carrillo reported to the California Highway Patrol San Juan Capistrano station in Orange County, claiming she had been involved in a hit-and-run.

Gascón emphasized that this behavior by law enforcement violates public trust and fails to uphold the duty to keep the public safe. The LAPD relieved Carrillo of her police powers pending an administrative investigation overseen by the Inspector General.
