Orange County, CA (June 14, 2024) – Motorcyclist Fatally Struck at Traffic Light: In a somber incident in Orange County, a motorcyclist tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle driven by Francisco Garcia-Vargas, a man suspected of DUI and driving without a license.
The crash occurred around 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of Orangethorpe Avenue and Gilbert Street, where the Fullerton Police Department responded to reports of a traffic collision.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the harrowing scene where a 1999 BMW 323i had collided with a black 2019 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The impact was severe, and the unidentified motorcycle rider was found east of the intersection, pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcyclist was stationary at a red light when the BMW, traveling at an unchanged speed, failed to stop or maneuver around the motorcycle, leading to a catastrophic rear-end collision.
The force of the crash was so intense that the motorcycle was wedged underneath the front of the BMW, which continued to drag it along Orangethorpe Avenue for a considerable distance.
Witnesses to the horrifying incident followed the BMW and detained the driver, later identified as 44-year-old Francisco Garcia-Vargas, until police arrived.
Video footage recorded shortly after the collision shows Garcia-Vargas stumbling during a field sobriety test, leading to his arrest on multiple charges including driving without a license, felony driving under the influence, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
In a related event during the ongoing investigation, a police cruiser blocking traffic was struck by a motorist driving a Tesla in self-drive mode. Fortunately, an officer standing near the vehicle managed to jump out of the way in time, avoiding injury. The police car, however, was left with substantial front-end damage.
