Anaheim, CA (April 13, 2024): (KTLA) – In a courtroom fraught with emotion, the culmination of a tragic saga unfolded as the California court delivered its verdict. Courtney Fritz Pandolfi, a 44-year-old resident of Garden Grove, Orange County, stood before the judge to receive her sentence on Friday.

This moment marked the end of a legal process that began with her guilty plea in February to two felonies: murder and driving under the influence of drugs causing bodily injury, with prior convictions exacerbating her culpability.

The Orange County Office of the District Attorney painted a harrowing picture of the events leading to Pandolfi’s conviction. On a fateful evening in Anaheim, August 11, 2020, Pandolfi, under the influence of a potent cocktail of drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine, careened down the streets.

Her impaired judgment led her to mount a curb, collide with a metal newspaper stand, and ultimately strike 23-year-old Yesenia Aguilar, who was pregnant at the time. The impact was devastating, yet Pandolfi showed no signs of stopping, continuing to drive for 347 feet before her vehicle finally succumbed to the damage.

Pedestrian accidents are often Tragic. Aguilar lost her life due to the severity of her injuries. However, amidst the despair, a glimmer of hope emerged as doctors successfully performed an emergency C-section, saving Aguilar’s unborn child.

Present in court to bear witness to the proceedings were Aguilar’s widower, James Alvarez, and their now three-year-old daughter, Adalyn Rose. Their presence served as a poignant reminder of the irreplaceable void left by Aguilar’s untimely demise and the enduring legacy of her selfless act to protect her unborn child.

District Attorney Todd Spitzer, in a solemn address, underscored the profound loss inflicted by Pandolfi’s reckless actions.

He emphasized the inherent responsibility individuals bear when operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, highlighting the devastating consequences that ripple through families and communities. Spitzer’s words echoed the sentiments of a society grappling with the preventable tragedies wrought by impaired driving.

Pandolfi’s criminal history further exacerbated the gravity of her actions. Previous convictions for driving under the influence of drugs in 2008, 2015, and 2016 painted a troubling pattern of behavior.

Despite receiving the Watson advisement—a stern warning mandated by California law for individuals convicted of DUI, informing them of the potential for murder charges should they cause a fatal accident— Pandolfi persisted in her reckless disregard for the safety of others.

As the courtroom proceedings drew to a close, the sentence handed down by the California court served as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the consequences of one’s choices.

Pandolfi’s 15-year to life sentence stands as a testament to the pursuit of justice in the face of tragedy, offering a modicum of solace to the grieving family of Yesenia Aguilar and a beacon of accountability in the ongoing battle against impaired driving.
