Oceanside, CA (Newsweek);-In the early hours of December 6, tragedy struck on Interstate 5 in Oceanside, claiming the life of Alberto Lucio, a 20-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine.
The events unfolded around 3:20 am when Darryl Sheffey, 36, was driving southbound on Interstate 5 in his Ford Edge. His vehicle crashed, and its lights went out, leaving it stranded in traffic lanes near Las Pulgas Road.
Upon witnessing the crash, Lucio, a member of Camp Pendleton, heroically stopped to assist Sheffey and a 31-year-old female passenger who were injured in the collision. However, amidst their efforts to aid the injured parties, tragedy struck again.
A 41-year-old man driving an international box truck collided with Sheffey’s vehicle and Lucio, who was rendering assistance. Despite the valiant efforts of those on the scene, Lucio was pronounced dead by Camp Pendleton Fire Personnel.
The news of Lucio’s untimely passing sent shockwaves through the Camp Pendleton community, with a spokesperson expressing deep sorrow in a news release issued on the same day.
Sheffey and the female passenger sustained major injuries in the crash and were promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
However, the repercussions of the incident extend beyond physical harm. Sheffey now faces multiple felony charges in connection with the collision and will be subject to legal proceedings once he has recovered from his injuries.
